However, the cellular CTGF protein abundance as well as CTGF content released into the medium did not substantially differ between beating and non-beating cardiomyocytes. The present results suggest that the large increase in CTGF gene expression in beating cardiomyocytes is not a cause but a result of beating, which may provide a putative pathway for controlling beating. Beating is sustained by developed cardiomyofibrils and directly upregulates CTGF gene expression, which is not followed by CTGF protein synthesis. The present results suggest that the large increase in CTGF gene expression in beating cardiomyocytes is not a cause but a result of beating, which may provide a putative pathway for controlling beating. A high level of apolipoprotein B (apoB) is associated with incident coronary artery disease (CAD) when low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) level is discordantly low or concordantly high. However, data on the relationship of apoB with subclinical measure of CAD are limited. Methods and ResultsA total of 14,205 men (mean age 41.0 years) who were free of cardiovascular disease at baseline and who underwent a health checkup exam, including measurement of coronary artery calcium (CAC), were studied. Of the study group, 2,773 participants (19.5%) had CAC at baseline, and CAC progression was observed in 2,550 (18.0%). The multivariate-adjusted CAC score ratios (95% confidence interval) comparing discordantly high apoB/low LDL-C and concordantly high apoB/high LDL-C with concordantly low apoB/low LDL-C were 1.51 (0.98-2.32) and 2.70 (2.19-3.33), respectively. The corresponding relative risks for CAC progression were 1.26 (1.02-1.56) and 1.49 (1.34-1.66), respectively. These associations did not change appreciably after adjustment for insulin resistance and subclinical inflammation. Discordant analysis showed that a high apoB level was strongly associated with prevalence and progression of CAC independent of LDL-C in a large cohort of healthy adults. The present study results highlighted the importance of an apoB measure as a potential target for primary prevention of coronary atherosclerosis in healthy adults.Discordant analysis showed that a high apoB level was strongly associated with prevalence and progression of CAC independent of LDL-C in a large cohort of healthy adults. Recent literature revealed that the molecular pathogenesis differs by histological subtype, and the histological subtype should be considered in deciding treatments for patients with uterine cervical cancer. However, no treatment based on histological type or genomic signature has been recommended in various treatment guidelines. The Japanese treatment guidelines recommend either radical hysterectomy or definitive radiotherapy as primary treatment for patients with stage IB-IIB squamous cell carcinoma and a radical hysterectomy-based approach for those with non-squamous cell carcinoma because of its lower radiosensitivity. The impact of histological type on survival outcome of uterine cervical cancer is controversial. Our retrospective studies suggested that the difference in survival outcome by histological subtype might be remarkable with disease progression. Recent literature suggested that usual-type endocervical adenocarcinoma, which is the most common histological type of cervical adenocarcinoma, showed a similar survival outcome to squamous cell carcinoma. In contrast, gastric-type mucinous carcinoma of the uterine cervix, which has aggressive clinical behavior and is not associated with high-risk human papillomavirus infection, showed resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Importantly, gastric-type mucinous carcinoma is rather common in Japan, compared with Western countries. It is therefore conceivable that the survival outcome of non-squamous cell carcinoma may be affected by regional difference in the frequency of gastric-type mucinous carcinoma. A molecular target to refractory uterine cervical cancer, such as gastric-type mucinous carcinoma of uterine cervix, still remains to be identified.A survey for nematode infection in German cockroaches captured in restaurants in various areas of Japan as well as the laboratory-bred colony was carried out. The nematodes were then identified morphologically and molecularly. Of the 320 German cockroaches collected at 79 restaurants in 26 prefectures in Japan, 66.6% (213/320) were found to be parasitized by a single species of pinworm in the hindgut. The mean number of pinworms per cockroach was less than 1.6. Of the three laboratory-bred lines of cockroaches examined, 2 lines (NIID and NK) were found to be infected with a single species of nematode. The prevalence was 93.0% (40/43) and 84.8% (39/46), respectively. The other laboratory line (WAT) was found to be free of the nematode infection. The nematode detected in this study was identified as Blatticola blattae. This is the first report of B. blattae infection in German cockroaches in Japan. Our study showed that B. blattae is distributed all over Japan together with its host Blattella germanica. An experimental infection with B. GS-0976 cost blattae in nematode-free cockroach by contaminating the rearing environment with infected-cockroach feces showed that once the environment of the cockroach is contaminated with B. blattae eggs, the pinworm infection could spread easily. This study aimed to detect filarial parasites in blood samples of Japanese black bears (Ursus thibetanus japonicus) collected from Iwate Prefecture, Japan. Positive amplicons were obtained from 26 out of 30 samples by nested PCR targeting 18S ribosomal RNA gene and first internal transcribed spacer regions. DNA sequences of Mansonella sp. close to M. ozzardi and Dirofilaria sp. were detected for eight and 11 positive amplicons, respectively. Co-infection was detected for the remaining seven amplicons. Dirofilaria sp. was identified as D. ursi by further genetic analysis of 5S ribosomal RNA gene sequence. The results of this study will contribute to further investigations of Japanese black bears for monitoring their risk as a reservoir of possible zoonotic filarial parasites.
