There is evidence that cannabis can cause hallucinations and psychosis especially with heavy and prolonged use. Parkinson's disease (PD) carries an increased risk for development of hallucinations and psychosis. It is possible that cannabis may exacerbate this risk and result in earlier and greater amounts of hallucinations and psychosis in this vulnerable population. A literature review was performed to determine the answer to that question. Two articles were found which listed the incidence of hallucinations and delusions during the use of cannabis in PD patients. 21.3% or 10 out of 47 patients reported development of hallucinations while treated with cannabis and 2.8% developed delusions. While these numbers are within the range of prevalence of hallucinations and psychosis in PD, the number of studies and patients evaluated are too small to make any definite conclusions pointing to the need for more research in this area.The scrutiny of environmental cleanups within the United States has been a growing area of interest for social scientists. Scholars have used case studies and modeling to analyze struggles for environmental justice and the economics of stigma associated with Superfund sites. This research has primarily analyzed community perspectives on remediation and removal, such as local strategies for participating in cleanup decisions. There has been less work on analyzing organizational perspectives on the social and institutional dynamics at play during cleanups. Our study addresses this gap by analyzing insights gained through interviewing U.S. Environmental Protection Agency staff who do cleanup work in brownfields, Superfund, and emergency response. This ethnographic research excavates the sedimented layers of social histories of contaminated sites local and regional contexts, institutional power and authority, and stakeholder relationships and networks. It interrogates how these sedimented social histories affect cleanup decisions, including the temporal and spatial boundaries of sites themselves. We find that the making of relationships is as important to cleanup strategies and outcomes as the scientific and technical aspects of cleanup are. This finding highlights the importance of tools and resources to excavate these social histories during environmental remediation, removal, and decontamination work.A commercial activated carbon (AC), obtained from peanut shells, was characterized and tested as adsorbent for the removal of the pharmaceutical products caffeine (CF) and diclofenac (DIC), which were used as model emerging contaminants. Nitrogen adsorption, XRD, SEM, FT-IR spectroscopy, and chemical analyses were typical of ACs, and Boehm titrations, calculations of surface sites distributions and zeta potential measurements indicated that reactions of deprotonable oxygenated groups at the AC surface lead to an isoelectric point of 3.2. A theoretical equation derived from the Langmuir isotherm is proposed to explain the adsorption percentage or adsorbed fraction (fads) as a function of the adsorbent dose (D, adsorbent "concentration"). Good fittings of the fads vs. D curves and the normal adsorption isotherms were obtained with the same Langmuir parameters. An important and practical application of this new equation is to permit a straightforward calculation of the solid dose needed to achieve a required adsorption percentage. With the aim of describing the adsorption processes of CF and DIC and their competition for surface sites under an ample range of concentrations, the adsorption of the emerging contaminants was investigated in single adsorbate experiments and with binary mixtures, and the competitive Langmuir model was applied. CF adsorption was high and independent of pH, whereas DIC adsorption was high between pH 4 and 6 and showed a continuous decrease from pH 6 to 10.5. The use of the competitive Langmuir isotherm for binary mixtures indicated that there was no pure competition between CF and DIC for surface sites. Instead, there was influenced competition, meaning that the presence of one substance at the surface modified the adsorption parameters of the other, either through lateral interaction forces or by changing the molecular orientation at the surface.
