A potential correlation between the gut microecology and host response to PS-MPs exposure was also observed. These results indicated that the PS-MPs may contribute to gut-liver axis disruption, which could be the underlying toxicological mechanisms of PS-MPs exposure. This work has improved our knowledge about the relationship between gut microbiota dysbiosis and host metabolic disorders following MPs exposure.Plastic polymers with different properties have been developed in the last 150 years to replace materials such as wood, glass and metals across various applications. Nevertheless, the distinct properties which make plastic desirable for our daily use also threaten our planet's sustainability. Plastics are resilient, non-reactive and most importantly, non-biodegradable. Hence, there has been an exponential increase in plastic waste generation, which has since been recognised as a global environmental threat. Plastic wastes have adversely affected life on earth, primarily through their undesirable accumulation in landfills, leaching into the soil, increased greenhouse gas emission, etc. Even more damaging is their impact on the aquatic ecosystems as they cause entanglement, ingestion and intestinal blockage in aquatic animals. Furthermore, plastics, especially in the microplastic form, have also been found to interfere with chemical interaction between marine organisms, to cause intrinsic toxicity by leaching, atic characteristics and metabolic pathway design, are also highlighted.A novel fluorescent lignin-based hydrogel with cellulose nanofibers and carbon dots (CDs) was synthesized for the high-value utilization of lignin and control of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). Its chemical and physical structure was characterized, and its Cr(VI) sorption performance was evaluated. The results demonstrated that 3D porous structures were constructed in this hydrogel. The maximum adsorption capacity of this hydrogel was 599.9 mg/g, and its sorption performance met Freundlich and pseudo-second-order models. Meanwhile, this novel hydrogel exhibited high sensitivity to Cr(VI), with a limit of detection of 11.2 mg/L and a wide linear range from 15 to 200 mg/L. Moreover, its mechanism for efficiently adsorbing and detecting Cr(VI) was analyzed. The results confirmed that the efficient adsorption and detection were due to these 3D porous structures generated by the lignin and cellulose nanofibers modified with CDs. The porous structures provided many active sites and ion transport channels, thereby improving the adsorption, and stabilized the fluorescence signal, thus enhancing the detection.Soils store significant amounts of carbon (C) and thus can play a critical role for mitigating climate change. Crop roots represent the main C source in agricultural soils and are particularly important for long-term C storage in agroecosystems. To evaluate the potential of different farming systems to contribute to soil C sequestration and thus climate change mitigation, it is of great importance to gain a better understanding of the factors influencing root C allocation and distribution. So far, it is still unclear how root C allocation varies among farming systems and whether the choice of management practices can help to enhance root C inputs. In this study, we compared root C allocation in three main arable farming systems, namely organic, no-till, and conventional farming. click here We assessed root biomass, vertical root distribution to 0.75 m soil depth, and root-shoot ratios in 24 winter wheat fields. We further evaluated the relative importance of the farming system compared to site conditions and quantified the contribution of individual management practices and pedoclimatic drivers. Farming system explained one third of the variation in topsoil root biomass and root-shoot ratios, both being strongly positively related to weed biomass and soil organic C content and negatively to mineral nitrogen fertilization intensity. Root C allocation was significantly higher in organic farming as illustrated by an increase in root biomass (+40%) and root-shoot ratios (+60%) compared to conventional farming. By contrast, the overall impact of no-till was low. The importance of pedoclimatic conditions increased substantially with soil depth and deep root biomass was largely controlled by precipitation and soil texture, while the impact of management was close to zero. Our findings highlight the potential of organic farming in promoting root C inputs to topsoils and thereby contributing to soil organic matter build-up and improved soil quality in agroecosystems. To combat climate change, the Chinese government has announced that the country will reach its national carbon emission peak within 2030. Various scenario studies suggest that technological advances in energy, such as energy efficiency and renewables, would be the leading determining factors for the peak in China's carbon emissions. However, most of these studies have failed to reflect the fact that China is shifting its economy from energy-intensive industries to non-energy-intensive industries, which may play a vital role in mitigating carbon emissions. To assess how economic structural changes may contribute to carbon emissions, an input-output optimization model was constructed and scenario analyses were performed. This model introduced the input-output model integrated with an optimization model to ensure the balance of economic structure in an optimal result. The results show that in 2030, China could peak its carbon emissions at 12.41 Gt CO2eq (parts per giga ton; carbon dioxide equivalent) by adjusting its energy-intensive economic structure of which the key sectors are coke refined petroleum and nuclear fuel (C8), chemicals and chemical products (C9), other nonmetallic minerals (C11), basic and fabricated metals (C12), and electricity gas and water supply (C17). The continuous increase in the added value of the tertiary industry could maintain a high GDP growth rate of 5.6% when the secondary industry is restricted to reduce carbon emissions. Accelerating the pace of China's economic transformation will be very conducive to an earlier realization of peaking CO2 emissions because the inhibition effect of structural change on carbon emissions presents an increasing marginal trend. From a policy perspective, the analytical techniques in this study could provide valuable information for decision-makers to regulate sector capital investment and formulate practical industrial policies with implications for CO2 emissions.
