Our results suggested that the surface modification of the substrate through photocatalysis using various photocatalysts along with the grafting of the poly(styrene)-b-poly(acrylic acid) copolymer could be a promising approach to alternatively control the blood compatibility on the protein surface.Spiro[imidazol-5-one-4,1'-cyclopropanes] behave as donor-acceptor (D-A) cyclopropanes in a formal cycloaddition reaction with aldehydes. The activation of such type of cyclopropanes is achieved with an equivalent of Brønsted acid. The reaction proceeds in high yields of 51-92% and demonstrates moderate diastereoselectivity at the quaternary stereocenter, which is determined by the electron-donating nature of the aldehyde partner. The ease of separation of stereoisomers allowed the creation of a library of 44 spiroannulated tetrahydrofurans with various substitution patterns.Hyperprins A (1) and B (2), two polyprenylated acylphloroglucinol related meroterpenoids with undescribed carbon skeletons, were isolated from Hypericum przewalskii. Compound 1 possesses a new 6/6/6/6/5/5 hexacyclic system with an unprecedented tetracyclo[10.3.1.03,8.08,12]hexadecane motif. Compound 2 features a unique 6/8/6/6 tetracyclic scaffold. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic data, chemical method, and X-ray crystallography. Compound 1 showed antiproliferation activity against the MV-4-11 cell line, and the p-bromobenzoate derivative of 2 displayed PTP1B inhibition.Several life-cycle assessments (LCAs) have evaluated the environmental impacts (EIs) of different wastewater treatment (WWT) configurations, attempting resource recovery and energy efficiency. However, a plant-wide LCA considering up-concentration primary treatment and low carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio sewage at the secondary biological treatment (SBT) has not yet been conducted. This study identifies the environmental trade-offs and hotspots for the chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT) and low C/N ratio SBT emerging processes compared to conventional WWT. The life-cycle inventories were calculated using a stoichiometric life-cycle inventory framework that couples stoichiometry and kinetics to obtain site-specific water, air, and soil emissions. The midpoint results of LCA show that CEPT with anaerobic digestion (AD) for sludge treatment achieves energy self-sufficiency, but increases marine eutrophication (MEu) by 1 order of magnitude compared to conventional WWT. A mainstream anaerobic fluidized-bed bioreactor and a partial nitritation-anammox fluidized-bed membrane bioreactor which can reduce all environmental impacts by 17-47%, including MEu, are proposed as the SBT of the low-carbon CEPT settled sewage. Integrating the standardized S-LCI framework resulted in a site-specific LCA that aids decision-makers on choosing between higher reductions in most EIs at the expense of high MEu or less but consistent reductions in all EI categories. In the past decades, various alternating current electroluminescent (ACEL) devices, especially the flexible ones, have been developed and used in flat panel display, large-scale decorating, logo display lighting, optical signaling, etc. Transparent plastics are usually used as substrates in ACEL devices; however, they are undegradable and may cause serious environmental pollution. Herein, we have developed a flexible transient ACEL device based on transparent fish gelatin (FG) films. The FG films were made from fish scales, which are sustainable, cost-efficient, and eco-friendly. AZ-33 These films could dissolve in water within seconds at 60 °C and degrade completely within 24 days in soil. The transmittance of these FG films was up to 91.1% in the visible spectrum, comparable to that of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) (90.4%). After forming a composite with silver nanowires (Ag NWs), the Ag NWs-FG film showed a transmittance up to 82.3% and a sheet resistance down to 22.4 Ω sq-1. The fabricated ACEL device based on the Ag NWs-FG film exhibited high flexibility and luminance up to 56.0 cd m-2. The device could be dissolved in water within 3 min. Our work demonstrates that the sustainable, flexible, and transparent FG films are a promising alternative for green and degradable substrates in the field of flexible electronics, including foldable displays, wearable devices, and health monitoring. The layered 2D MOFs, owing to their enhanced flexibility and tunability, have recently emerged as a promising alternative to the 3D microporous MOFs in the quest for novel responsive functional materials. However, maintaining the simultaneous control over self-assembly of molecular building blocks as well as ordered stacking of MOF layers poses a significant synthetic challenge. We report on the controlled 2D MOF formation based on a case study of solvent-templated growth of a series of 2D Cu(II)-carboxylate MOFs varying in stacking modes and distances using a diffusion-controlled MOF deposition approach in various solvent mixtures. Moreover, we demonstrate the structural dynamics of the developed 2D MOFs involving both in-plane and out-of-plane movements of the individual 2D layers triggered by solvent exchange, which allowed for selective postsynthetic transformations between the developed 2D MOFs. We also investigated the gas adsorption properties of the developed MOFs, which demonstrates a remarkable crystal size effect on the N2 adsorption capacity using a model 2D MOF system.Previous studies demonstrated that peptides produced by the hydrolysis of olive seed proteins using Alcalase enzyme showed in vitro multifunctional lipid-lowering capability. This work presents a deeper insight into the hypolipidemic effect of olive seed peptides. The capability of olive seed peptides to inhibit endogenous cholesterol biosynthesis through the inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase enzyme was evaluated observing a 38 ± 7% of inhibition. Two in vivo assays using different peptides concentrations (200 and 400 mg/kg/day) were designed to evaluate the hypolipidemic effect of olive seed peptides in male and female mice. A low concentration of hydrolysate reduced total cholesterol in male mice in a 20% after 11 weeks compared to the mice feeding with hypercholesterolemic diet. A higher hydrolysate concentration showed a greater reduction in total cholesterol (25%). The analysis of the olive seed hydrolysate by reverse phase high-performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (RP-HPLC-MS) enabled the identification of peptides that could be responsible for this hypolipidemic effect.
