Objective of this study was to recover bioactive compounds from grape pomace, and to investigate the effect of thermosonication in the rate of aqueous extraction. The best extraction for phenolics and total anthocyanins, was at 55 °C, amplitude of 40% and 6 min of treatment. The ultrasound assisted extraction showed superior results when compared to conventional extraction, extraction averages were 11% total phenolic compounds, 25% total anthocyanins. The extract obtained by ultrasound showed higher antioxidant capacity when compared to the one obtained by conventional extraction. The alginate-Ca2+ capsules were stable when stored in the presence or absence of light, with a reduced t1/2 (absence of light), indicating longer half-life in the absence of light. The use of thermosonication favored greater amounts of bioactive compounds in the grape pomace aqueous extract, and this encapsulated extract in alginate-Ca2+ shows good stability and less degradation in the light absence.The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different curing methods on protein structure, protein and lipid oxidation, lypolysis and volatile compounds in duck breast meat. The results showed that compared to static brining and pulsed pressure salting, the vacuum tumbling curing significantly decreased the oxidation of proteins and lipids, and the surface hydrophobicity of proteins, increased α-helix structure but decreased the proportion of β-sheet, and increased actomyosin dissociation, liplysis and the free fatty acid content in meat. Meanwhile, vacuum tumbling curing decreased the amount of volatile flavor compounds, hexanal, 2,3-octanone, and off-flavor compounds 1-octen-3-ol and 1-hexanol. This study suggests that concerns on healthiness and the sensory quality of processed meat products should be paid in the selection of curing methods and vacuum tumbling curing is superior in terms of both aspects.During dry-cured ham processing, phospholipids (PL) are the main substrates of lipolysis and oxidation. However, the published data on individual PL classes in the pig muscle are inconsistent. This study determined the PL class contents and composition in biceps femoris of Iberian pigs according to the rearing system (Montanera vs Pienso). Phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), cardiolipin (CL) and sphingomyelin contents were higher in the Montanera pigs than in the Pienso pigs. Total PL and PC, PE, phosphatidylinositol + phosphatidylserine and CL contained higher levels of oleic acid and slightly higher levels of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) but lower levels of n-6 PUFA in the Montanera pigs than in the Pienso pigs. The rearing system had no effect on the plasmalogen content but influenced aldehyde composition, mainly in PE and in total PL. These results can partially explain the differences in sensory properties of dry-cured ham between the Montanera and Pienso systems.The inhibition of the α-amylase and α-glucosidase activity facilitates the maintenance of circulating glucose levels by decreasing the rate of blood sugar absorption. Existing enzyme inhibitors such as acarbose, miglitol, and voglibose are used for inhibiting the activity of these enzymes, however, alternative solutions are required to avoid the side-effects of using these drugs. The current study aims to review recent evidence regarding the in vitro α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition activities of extracts derived from selected fruit, vegetables, and mushrooms. The mechanisms of action of the extracts involved in the inhibition of both enzymes are also presented and discussed. Compounds including flavonoids, phenolic acids, anthocyanins, saponins, carotenoids, terpenes, sugars, proteins, capsaicinoids, fatty acids, alkaloids have been shown to have α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition activities. Harvesting period, maturity stage, sample preparation, extraction technique, and solvent type are parameters that affect the α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition activities of the extracts. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) has emerged as a valuable biomarker of urinary tract infection (UTI) in children. This study aimed to compare the diagnostic accuracy of urinary NGAL (uNGAL) with those of serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood cell (WBC) count for predicting UTI and acute pyelonephritis (APN) in febrile children. The medical charts of children undergoing uNGAL measurements between November 2017- and August 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with a suspected or diagnosed UTIs were included. The diagnostic accuracies of uNGAL, serum CRP, and WBC count for detecting UTI and APN were investigated. Toyocamycin Independent predictors of UTI and APN were investigated using multivariable logistic regression analyses. A total of 321 children were enrolled in this study. The uNGAL levels were higher in the UTI group (n = 157) than in the non-UTI group (n = 164) (P < 0.05). Among children with a UTI, uNGAL levels were higher in the APN group (n = 70) than, the non-APN group (n = 87) (P < 0.05) In the multivariate analysis, uNGAL was independently associated with UTI and APN (both P < 0.05). Serum CRP and WBC count were not correlated with the presence of UTI and APN. Receiver operating curve analyses showed that the uNGAL level had the highest area under the curve (AUC) for predicting UTI and APN, respectively (AUC, uNGAL vs. CRP vs. WBC count, 0.860 vs. 0.608 vs. 0.669 for UTI; 0.780 vs. 0.680 vs. 0.639 for APN, all P < 0.05, respectively). The predictive values and likelihood ratios of uNGAL were superior to those of serum CRP and WBC count for detecting UTI and APN at each cutoff level. PNES, which occur in vulnerable individuals who often have experienced trauma and are precipitated by overwhelming circumstances, are a body's expression of a distressed mind, a cry for help. PNES are misunderstood, mistreated, under-recognized, and underdiagnosed. The mind-body dichotomy, an artificial divide between physical and mental health and brain disorders into neurology and psychiatry, contributes to undue delays in the diagnosis and treatment of PNES. One of the major barriers in the effective diagnosis and treatment of PNES is the dissonance caused by different illness perceptions between patients and providers. While patients are bewildered by their experiences of disabling attacks beyond their control or comprehension, providers consider PNES trivial because they are not epileptic seizures and are caused by psychological stress. The belief that patients with PNES are feigning or controlling their symptoms leads to negative attitudes of healthcare providers, which in turn lead to a failure to provide the support and respect that patients with PNES so desperately need and deserve.
