BACKGROUND Few studies address the demographics/epidemiology of patients presenting to emergency departments (ED) for evaluation of sexual assault across an entire nation. It was the purpose of this study to analyze the demographics of sexual assault using a national data base. METHODS This was a retrospective study of prospectively collected data from National Electronic Injury Surveillance System - All Injury Program for years 2005-2013. Patients presenting for sexual assault were analyzed. Descriptive and logistic regression statistical analyses were performed with SUDAAN 11.0.01™ software. A p  less then  0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS Sexual assault accounted for an estimated 657,719 ED visits (0.24% of all injuries, and 3.4% of injuries due to violence). Between 2011 and 2019, Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), in collaboration with the Open Society Foundation (OSF), the Open Society Justice Initiative (OSJI) and regional and local partners, worked to establish effective torture investigation and documentation practices in the Central Asian countries of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Kazakhstan. Our approach consisted of activities in three sequential phases - (1) assessment, (2) capacity building, and (3) policy reform. In this paper, we briefly describe activities during each phase and identify key lessons learned from these experiences and resulting policy and program reforms as a model for future efforts in other settings. This investigation using a molluscan animal model tested the hypothesis that experimentally induced lysosomal autophagy protects against oxidative cell injury. Induction of augmented lysosomal autophagy has previously been implicated in this protective process. Four treatment groups of blue mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) were used Group 1 (fed - control), Group 2 (fasted), Group 3 (copper + fed) and Group 4 (copper + fasted). Groups 2 and 4 were fasted in order to trigger autophagy; and samples of hepatopancreas (liver analogue or digestive gland) from all 4 groups were taken at 3, 6 and 15 days. Treatment with copper provided a positive reference for oxidative stress Groups 3 and 4 were treated with copper (10 μg Cu2+/animal/day) for three days only. Oxidative damage and cellular injury in hepatopancreatic digestive cells was found to decrease in Group 2 (fasted) compared to Group 1 (fed - control). Estimates can be made for a sampled area or values can be extrapolated to represent biomass over a larger region. Typically biomass is scaled-up using the area multiplied by the mean a non-spatial method. Where algal biomass is patchy or shows gradients, non-spatial estimates for an area may be improved by spatial interpolation. A separate issue with scaling-up biomass estimates is that conventional confidence intervals based on the standard error (SE) of the sample may not be appropriate. The issues around interpolation and confidence intervals were examined for three fucoid species using data from 40 × 0.25 m-2 quadrats thrown in a 0.717 ha sampling plot on the shore of Galway Bay. Despite evidence of spatial autocorrelation, interpolation did not appear to improve estimates of the total plot biomass of Fucus serratus and F. vesiculosus. In contrast, interpolated estimates for Ascophyllum nodosum had less error than those based on the non-spatial method. Bootstrapped confidence intervals had several benefits over those based on the SE. These benefits include the avoidance of negative confidence limits at low sample sizes and no assumptions of normality in the data. If there is reason to expect strong patchiness or a gradient of biomass in the area of interest, interpolation is likely to produce more accurate estimates of biomass than non-spatial methods. Development of methodologies for biomass would benefit from more definition of local and regional gradients in biomass and their associated covariates. The effects of contaminants on marine organisms have been documented since decades, but the long-term responses and recovery rates of benthic communities to mixtures of contaminants, several years after the cessation of industrial activities, need to be further investigated. Bagnoli-Coroglio Bay (Gulf of Naples, Tyrrhenian Sea) is a typical example of historically contaminated coastal area due to industrial activities stopped at the beginning of nineties. In the present study we carried out a fine spatial scale analysis of the distribution of meiofaunal (and nematodes) assemblages along five bathymetric transects located at increasing distance from the historical source of contamination in relation with the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and heavy metal concentrations present in the sediment. Meiofaunal abundance and biomass changed widely along transects but independent from the distance from the source of contamination. Even when the contamination levels were expected to induce significant detrimental biological consequences, meiofaunal abundance and biomass were similar to those reported in unpolluted benthic coastal areas worldwide.
