As there was no effect of gonadectomy on its own on any of the behavioural measures collected, our results suggest that androgens may be involved in compensatory downstream effects of PICK1 knockdown. Taken together, these results highlight the need for consideration of sex as a biological variable when examining mechanisms underlying all behaviours, as convergent sex differences can reveal different mechanisms where behavioural sex differences do not exist.Throughout the Negev Desert highlands, thousands of ancient petroglyphs sites are susceptible to deterioration processes that may result in the loss of this unique rock art. Therefore, the overarching goal of the current study was to characterize the composition, diversity and effects of microbial colonization of the rocks to find ways of protecting these unique treasures. The spatial organization of the microbial colonizers and their relationships with the lithic substrate were analysed using scanning electron microscopy. This approach revealed extensive epilithic and endolithic colonization and close microbial-mineral interactions. Shotgun sequencing analysis revealed various taxa from the archaea, bacteria and some eukaryotes. Metagenomic coding sequences (CDS) of these microbial lithobionts exhibited specific metabolic pathways involved in the rock elements' cycles and uptake processes. Thus, our results provide evidence for the potential participation of the microorganisms colonizing these rocks during different solubilization and mineralization processes. These damaging actions may contribute to the deterioration of this extraordinary rock art and thus threaten this valuable heritage. Shotgun metagenomic sequencing, in conjunction with the in situ scanning electron microscopy study, can thus be considered an effective strategy to understand the complexity of the weathering processes occurring at petroglyph sites and other cultural heritage assets. The aim of this study was to describe the resilience of nurses who cared for patients with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis, as well as factors that potentially contributed to that resilience. A total of 23 frontline nurses who cared for patients with COVID-19 were recruited from a COVID-19-designated facility in Shanghai, China, using purposive sampling strategies. In-depth interviews were conducted from March to May 2020. Qualitative data were transcribed verbatim and content analysis was used. Nurses exhibited psychological resilience while caring for patients with COVID-19. They displayed an ability to bounce back from negative mental experiences and transform to a positive mindset to cope with the stress they faced. Factors that enhanced the nurses' resilience during the pandemic were their becoming familiar with infectious disease protocols, having a sense of professional achievement, receiving social support, having trust in the infection-control response team in the hospital, and using self-regulation strategies. This study could guide the design of future resilience-enhancing interventions that provide positive coping strategies for nurses caring for individuals with infectious diseases during a pandemic. In a 2-year longitudinal study of 220 families, we examined how youth gender and adrenocortical and parasympathetic activity moderated reciprocal, bidirectional relations between parent and youth anxiety and depression problems. Maternal anxiety predicted subsequent youth anxiety and depression. Maternal depression predicted youth anxiety and, for daughters and youth with low adrenocortical reactivity, youth depression. Youth depression predicted maternal depression only for youth with high adrenocortical reactivity. There were no associations between paternal and youth psychopathology. Examining youth gender and psychophysiological characteristics that shape the nature of bidirectional influences may inform efforts to identify families at heightened risk for intergenerational transmission of psychopathology.Examining youth gender and psychophysiological characteristics that shape the nature of bidirectional influences may inform efforts to identify families at heightened risk for intergenerational transmission of psychopathology. In the western United States, the population of migratory monarch butterflies is on the brink of collapse, having dropped from several million butterflies in the 1980s to ~2000 butterflies in the winter of 2020-2021. At the same time, a resident (non-migratory) monarch butterfly population in urban gardens has been growing in abundance. The new resident population is not sufficient to make up for the loss of the migratory population; there are still orders of magnitude fewer butterflies now than in the recent past. The resident population also probably lacks the demographic capacity to expand its range inland during summer months. Nonetheless, the resident population may have the capacity to persist. This sudden change emphasises the extent to which environmental change can have unexpected consequences, and how quickly these changes can happen. selleck inhibitor We hope it will provoke discussion about how we define resilience and viability in changing environments.Although immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have achieved unprecedented success in dMMR tumors, pMMR tumors accounting for 85% of colorectal cancer (CRC) cases remain unresponsive. Lactate dehydrogenase A (LDH-A) is the rate-limiting enzyme that catalyzes the transformation of pyruvate to lactate in the process of glycolysis. We investigated the relationship between LDH-A and dMMR with the purpose of exploring the treatment strategy for pMMR CRC patients. We here show that LDH-A can promote the proliferation of dMMR and pMMR CRC cells by positively regulating MMR proteins both in vitro and in vivo. LDH-A inhibition can improve the efficacy of PD-1 blockade in a pMMR CRC xenograft model. A statistical analysis of 186 CRC specimens showed a significant correlation between LDH-A and dMMR status. Moreover, patients with both low LDH-A expression and dMMR exhibited better disease-free survival compared with patients with other combinations. The close correlation of LDH-A and dMMR may offer a promising therapeutic strategy in which the combination of LDH-A inhibitor and ICIs may improve the clinical benefit for pMMR CRC patients.
