Objectives Being a caregiver of an older adult is often associated with poor psychological outcomes and stress. Individual differences, such as personality, may moderate responses to caregiving. In this study, we examined (a) personality and psychological health of family caregivers compared to non-caregivers and (b) tested interactions between caregiver status and personality (both domains and facets) in predicting psychological outcomes.Methods Data were from an online sample of caregivers of older relatives (N = 491; 71.9% females) and matched controls (N = 491). Participants completed the Big Five Inventory-2 and a comprehensive set of psychological health and well-being measures.Results Compared to non-caregivers, caregivers had higher neuroticism, lower energy level (extraversion facet) and higher compassion (agreeableness facet). They also reported higher depression, anxiety, loneliness, and lower well-being and life satisfaction. Personality traits and facets had strong associations with psychological outcomes, and these associations were similar across the two groups. In the context of caregiving, its assessment may help to identify caregivers at risk of poor outcomes and inform intervention programs. Further research is needed to replicate the findings and investigate longitudinal interrelations among variables.The main aim of this study was to investigate the relation between anterior tragal crease (ATC) and coronary artery lesion complexity and severity assessed using the SYNTAX score (SXscore) in patients with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). A total of 121 patients with a first-time diagnosis of NSTEMI were consecutively enrolled. ATC was defined as ≥1 crease that was close to the tragus and descended anteriorly. SXscore was calculated using the SXscore algorithm. The SXscore was higher in the ATC-positive group than in the ATC-negative group (11.85 ± 8.20 vs 7.52 ± 6.38, P = .003). In the univariate analysis, hemoglobin (male 11.7-17.4 g/dL, female 11.7-16.1 g/dL; P = .006), diabetes mellitus (P = .031), current smoking (P = .022), and presence of ATC (P = .022) were significantly associated with increased SXscore. Multivariate analysis revealed ATC (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.313-7.800, P = .011), current smoking (95% CI 2.034-13.893, P = .001), and hemoglobin (95% CI 0.433-0.822, P = .002) as independent determinants of increased SXscore. Presence of ATC in patients with NSTEMI may be a warning signal of complexity and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD).Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia are a major reason for institutionalization, and high demanding for staff in Residential Care Facilities. This article reports the design, implementation, and evaluation of a Validation Therapy pilot-training program (VALIDA) for staff members of a residential care facility in Aveiro, Portugal. This pilot study involved 22 members of the staff, including qualified professionals and nonqualified direct care workers, who were involved in the design. The pilot-training program comprises two components training sessions in group and individual monitoring between those sessions. The evaluation indicates that the structure of the pilot-program was well accepted, and participants reported positive impacts in professional (better skilled to deal with residents with dementia) and personal (better trained to deal with elderly relatives) lives. This pilot-training program shows potential to be used in residential care facilities and needs to be replicated.Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) employing a non-noble substrate in comparison with conventional noble-metal ones offers advantages of low cost and rich selection of candidates; however, its application has been seriously hindered by its unsatisfactory detection sensitivity, poor uniformity, and undesirable modification of vibrational signals via changing the orientation and/or polarizability of probe molecules. Here, an unusually sensitive but nonselective enhancement was achieved by employing titanium carbide sheets modified with aluminum oxyanions in situ as active supports for Raman measurement. The analyte molecules adopted a conformation similar to what they adopt on a bare substrate, while closely interacting with the aluminum oxyanion surface, which leads to the rare observation of highly sensitive but nonselective enhancement with a detection limit close to the pM level. With the substrate surface roughness in the nanometer region, an outstanding uniformity with a relative standard deviation of less than 4.3% was achieved. In addition, the SERS effect on the modified titanium carbide sheets was shown to be applicable to a wide range of analyte molecules, including both organic dyes and trace harmful compounds. The success of the work demonstrates the feasibility of surface tuning to improve the SERS effect, and it introduces a new window for two-dimensional materials in SERS applications.Furanoid 8-epidiosbulbin E acetate (EEA) is one of the most abundant diterpenoid lactones in herbal medicine Dioscorea bulbifera L. (DB). Our early work proved that EEA could be metabolized to EEA-derived cis-enedial (EDE), a reactive intermediate, which is required for the hepatotoxicity observed in experimental animals exposed to EEA. Also, we found that EDE could modify hepatic protein by reaction with thiol groups and/or primary amines of protein. The present study was inclined to develop polyclonal antibodies to detect protein modified by EDE. An immunogen was prepared by reaction of EDE with keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH), and polyclonal antibodies were raised in rabbits immunized with the immunogen. Antisera collected from the immunized rabbits demonstrated high titers evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). Immunoblot analysis showed that the polyclonal antibodies recognized EDE-modified bovine serum albumin (BSA) in a hapten load-dependent manner but did not cross-react with native BSA.
