The development of asthma and its related phenotypes is most likely due to the polymorphism of the so-called modifier genes. The goal of this study was to evaluate the polymorphic locus rs1695 of the gene association with risk factors for developing asthma and its phenotypic manifestations. This case-control study involved 164 patients with confirmed asthma diagnosis and 147 age- and sex-matched controls. Patients were divided into two groups with ( = 121) and without complications ( = 43). Among asthmatic patients, 34 manifested hypersensitivity to household allergens. The rs1695 polymorphism was genotyped using the technique of polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. There were no differences between patients and controls in allelic or genotype frequencies of polymorphic locus rs1695 of the gene. However, the frequency of the A/A genotype in the patient group with complications was significantly lower than that in complication-free patients ( = 0.040), while the frequency of the G allele was higher in patients with complications ( = 0.030). The frequency of the A/A genotype was decreased in the patient group with an allergic reaction to household allergens in comparison with controls ( = 0.037). These results suggest that the carriage of the A/A genotype of polymorphic locus rs1695 of the gene is a protective factor in the development of complications and an allergic reaction to house allergens among asthmatics, while the carriage of the G allele is associated with an increased risk for asthma complications. These results suggest that the carriage of the A/A genotype of polymorphic locus rs1695 of the GSTP1 gene is a protective factor in the development of complications and an allergic reaction to house allergens among asthmatics, while the carriage of the G allele is associated with an increased risk for asthma complications.Gaze-evoked amaurosis is a transient monocular vision loss elicited by eccentric gaze and has been reported in many orbital conditions but is most classically associated with intraconal tumors, such as cavernous hemangioma and optic nerve sheath meningioma. Here, the authors report a case of gaze-evoked amaurosis due to idiopathic orbital inflammation. The patient was a 35-year-old man who presented with vision loss only when abducting his left eye. He had a history of sclerosing idiopathic orbital inflammation with a left orbital intraconal mass diagnosed 15 months prior to the current presentation. The patient had difficulty with immunosuppressive therapy, which was stopped 5 months prior to presentation. Repeat imaging during the current presentation revealed enlargement of the mass. MK-0859 This case demonstrates that idiopathic orbital inflammation should be considered in the differential diagnosis for gaze-evoked amaurosis, which may be the first symptom of disease progression. Vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) often coexists with asthma and exacerbates respiratory symptoms. A noninvasive method could be considered beneficial for the detection and follow-up of VCD complicated by asthma. Here, we report a case of VCD complicated by asthma, highlighting the effectiveness of colored three-dimensional (3-D) imaging of respiratory impedance using a broadband frequency forced oscillation technique (MostGraph). A 74-year-old woman with difficult-to-treat asthma, in whom mepolizumab treatment was ineffective, was referred to our hospital. Stridulous sounds were loudest over the anterior neck. Pulmonary function tests' results were normal; however, a flattening of the inspiratory flow-volume curve was detected. Remarkably, prominent spikes were observed in the inspiratory phase in the colored 3-D imaging of respiratory resistance, which was superimposed on increased respiratory resistance in the expiratory phase. Flexible laryngoscopy revealed the adduction of vocal cords on inspiration. The patient was diagnosed with asthma complicated by VCD. After successful treatment of VCD by speech therapy, inspiratory spikes of respiratory resistance disappeared, and normal vocal cord movement was observed on laryngoscopy. The present case report indicates the effectiveness of forced oscillometry in evaluating dynamic changes in respiratory resistance for detecting and monitoring VCD complicated by asthma. The present case report indicates the effectiveness of forced oscillometry in evaluating dynamic changes in respiratory resistance for detecting and monitoring VCD complicated by asthma. To evaluate the role of quantitative MRI parameters in predicting HIFU ablation results for uterine fibroids. A total of 245 patients with uterine fibroids who underwent HIFU treatment in Chongqing Haifu Hospital were reviewed retrospectively. The patients were divided into two groups according to the non-perfused volume (NPV) ratio which was either higher or lower than 80%. The MRI parameters were measured, and a logistical regression analysis was performed to investigate the potential predictors associated with the NPV ratio. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis was used to determine the cut off value for MRI parameters in predicting a high NPV ratio. The subcutaneous fat thickness in the group of patients with an NPV ratio over 80% was significantly thinner than that in the group of patients with an NPV ratio less than 80% (15 mm versus 21 mm). The signal intensity ratio of fibroids to skeletal muscle on T2WI was significantly lower in the group of patients with an NPV ratio over 80% compared with the group with an NPV ratio lower than 80% (2.46 versus 3.23). The signal intensity ratio of fibroid to skeletal muscle correlated negatively with the NPV ratio and positively with the energy efficiency factor (EEF). The cut off value of signal intensity ratio of fibroid to muscle for predicting the NPV ratio over 80% is 3.045. The signal intensity ratio of fibroid to skeletal muscle on T2WI can be used as a factor for predicting the effectiveness of HIFU ablation of uterine fibroids. The signal intensity ratio of fibroid to skeletal muscle on T2WI can be used as a factor for predicting the effectiveness of HIFU ablation of uterine fibroids.
