The challenge of how to communicate these then becomes apparent. Based on empirical work (total n = 5520, UK) supported by in-person interviews with the public and physicians, we make recommendations on the presentation of such information. These include using predominantly percentages when communicating the absolute risk, but also providing, for balance, a format which conveys a contrasting (higher) perception of risk (expected frequency out of 10 000); using a visual linear scale cut at an appropriate point to illustrate the maximum risk, explained through an illustrative 'persona' who might face that highest level of risk; and providing context to the absolute risk through presenting a range of other 'personas' illustrating people who would face risks of a wide range of different levels. These 'personas' should have their major risk factors (age, existing health conditions) described. By contrast, giving people absolute likelihoods of other risks they face in an attempt to add context was considered less helpful. We note that observed effect sizes generally were small. However, even small effects are meaningful and relevant when scaled up to population levels.For dynamical systems that can be modelled as asymptotically stable linear systems forced by Gaussian noise, this paper develops methods to infer (estimate) their dominant modes from observations in real time. The modes can be real or complex. For a real mode (monotone decay), the goal is to infer its damping rate and mode shape. For a complex mode (oscillatory decay), the goal is to infer its frequency, damping rate and (complex) mode shape. Their amplitudes and correlations are encoded in a mode covariance matrix that is also to be inferred. The work is motivated and illustrated by the problem of detection of oscillations in power flow in AC electrical networks. Suggestions of some other applications are given.Locomotor energetics are an important determinant of an animal's ecological niche. It is commonly assumed that animals minimize locomotor energy expenditure by selecting gait kinematics tuned to the natural frequencies of relevant body parts. We demonstrate that this allows estimation of the preferred step frequency and walking speed of Tyrannosaurus rex, using an approach we introduce as the Natural Frequency Method. Although the tail of bipedal dinosaurs was actively involved in walking, it was suspended passively by the caudal interspinous ligaments. These allowed for elastic energy storage, thereby reducing the metabolic cost of transport. In order for elastic energy storage to be high, step and natural frequencies would have to be matched. Using a 3D morphological reconstruction and a spring-suspended biomechanical model, we determined the tail natural frequency of T. rex (0.66 s-1, range 0.41-0.84), and the corresponding walking speed (1.28 m s-1, range 0.80-1.64), which we argue to be a good indicator of preferred walking speed (PWS). The walking speeds found here are lower than earlier estimations for large theropods, but agree quite closely with PWS of a diverse group of extant animals. The results are most sensitive to uncertainties regarding ligament moment arms, vertebral kinematics and ligament composition. However, our model formulation and method for estimation of walking speed are unaffected by assumptions regarding muscularity, and therefore offer an independent line of evidence within the field of dinosaur locomotion.We study theoretically the transport properties of electrons in a quantum dot system with spin-orbit coupling. By using the quantum master equation approach, the shot noise and skewness of the transport electrons are calculated. We obtain super-Poisson noise behaviour by investigating the full counting statistics of the transport system. In general, higher concentration of bacteria in soil caused a reduction in tunnelling activity and wood consumption and an increase in mortality. However, application on wood revealed a different outcome. The set films were characterized by thermal analysis. To study their anticorrosion properties, polarization measurements and EIS in 3.5% NaCl solution were determined. The coatings displayed good thermal stability and anticorrosion properties which were supported by XRD analysis.
