Many bacterial pathogens utilize translocated virulence factors called effectors to successfully infect their host. Within the host cell, effector proteins facilitate pathogen replication through subversion of host cell targets and processes. Legionella pneumophila is a Gram-negative intracellular bacterial pathogen that relies on hundreds of translocated effectors to replicate within host phagocytes. Within this large arsenal of translocated effectors is a unique subset of effectors called metaeffectors, which target and regulate other effectors. At least one dozen metaeffectors are encoded by L. pneumophila; however, mechanisms by which they promote virulence are largely unknown. This review details current knowledge of L pneumophila metaeffector function, challenges associated with their identification, and potential avenues to reveal the contribution of metaeffectors to bacterial pathogenesis.Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is estimated to be overexpressed in 60~80% of colorectal cancer (CRC), which is associated with a poor prognosis. Anti-EGFR targeted monoclonal antibodies (cetuximab and panitumumab) have played an important role in the treatment of metastatic CRC. However, the therapeutic response of anti-EGFR monoclonal antibodies is limited due to multiple resistance mechanisms. With the discovery of new functions for gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), we hypothesize that cetuximab-conjugated AuNPs (cetuximab-AuNPs) will not only improve the cytotoxicity for cancer cells, but also introduce expression change of the related biomarkers on cancer cell surface. In this contribution, we investigated the size-dependent cytotoxicity of cetuximab-AuNPs to CRC cell line (HT-29), while also monitored the expression of cell surface biomarkers in response to treatment with cetuximab and cetuximab-AuNPs. AuNPs with the size of 60 nm showed the highest impact for cell cytotoxicity, which was tested by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay. Three cell surface biomarkers including epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM), melanoma cell adhesion molecule (MCAM), and human epidermal growth factor receptor-3 (HER-3) were found to be expressed at higher heterogeneity when cetuximab was conjugated to AuNPs. Both surface-enhanced Raman scattering/spectroscopy (SERS) and flow cytometry demonstrated the correlation of cell surface biomarkers in response to the drug treatment. We thus believe this study provides powerful potential for drug-conjugated AuNPs to enhance cancer prognosis and therapy. This paper presents a new A-weighting filter's design and explores the potential of using approximate multiplication for low-power digital A-weighting filter implementation. It presents a thorough analysis of the effects of approximate multiplication, coefficient quantization, the order of first-order sections in the filter's cascade, and zero-pole pairings on the frequency response of the digital A-weighting filter. The proposed A-weighting filter was implemented as a sixth-order IIR filter using approximate odd radix-4 multipliers. The proposed filter was synthesized (Verilog to GDS) using the Nangate45 cell library, and MATLAB simulations were performed to verify the designed filter's magnitude response and performance. Synthesis results indicate that the proposed design achieves nearly 70% reduction in energy (power-delay product) with a negligible deviation of the frequency response from the floating-point implementation. Experiments on acoustic noise suggest that the proposed digital A-weighting filter can be deployed in environmental noise measurement applications without any notable performance degradation. This research aims to study the process of separating water contaminated with oil using a hydrocyclone with a porous wall (membrane), containing two tangential inlets and two concentric outlets (concentrate and permeate), at the base of the equipment. For the study, the computational fluid dynamics technique was used in a Eulerian-Eulerian approach to solve the mass and linear momentum conservation equations and the turbulence model. The effects of the concentration polarization layer thickness and membrane rejection coefficient on the permeate flow, hydrodynamic behavior of the fluids inside the hydrocyclone, and equipment performance were evaluated. Results of the velocity, transmembrane pressure and oil concentration profiles along the equipment, and hydrocyclone performance are presented and analyzed. The results confirmed the effect of the membrane rejection coefficient on the equipment performance and the high potential of the hydrocyclone with a porous wall to be used in the oil-water mixture separation. There is growing evidence that the food environment can influence diets. The present study aimed to assess the relative availability and prominence of healthy foods (HF) versus unhealthy products (UP) in supermarkets in Buenos Aires, Argentina and to explore differences by retail characteristics and neighborhood income level. We conducted store audits in 32 randomly selected food retails. Food availability (presence/absence, ratio of cumulative linear shelf length for HF vs. 5-Fluorouridine ic50 UP) and prominence inside the store (location visibility) were measured based on the International Network for Food and Obesity/NCDs Research, Monitoring and Action Support (INFORMAS) protocol. On average, for every 1 m of shelf length for UP, there was about 25 cm of shelf length for HF (HF/UP ratio 0.255, SD 0.130). UP were more frequently available in high-prominence store areas (31/32 retails) than HF (9/32 retails). Shelf length ratio differed across commercial chains (p = 0.0268), but not by store size or type. Retails in the lower-income neighborhoods had a lower HF/UP ratio than those in the higher-income neighborhoods (p = 0.0329). Availability of the selected HF was overcome largely by the UP, particularly in high prominence areas, and in neighborhoods with lower income level, which may pose an opportunity for public health interventions. The objective of the current study was to evaluate intra- and interobserver bone volume measurements and effect of orientation on the reliability of bone volume evaluation in as-acquired vis-à-vis oriented cone beam computed tomography scans using Osirix software and possible correlation between gender, age, and bone volume required. For this, 31 cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 14 girls and 17 boys (aged 9-13) with unilateral cleft lip and/or palate who met the inclusion criteria were analyzed. Efficacy and reliability of third party software Osirix for bone volume calculation was assessed using as acquired and oriented volumes by three specialists (a radiologist, an orthodontist, and an oral maxillofacial surgeon). The dataset and readings were anonymized to prevent any bias. Two-way mixed model analysis on as-acquired and oriented observations exhibited intra-class coefficient (ICC) values ≥ 0.90. Wilcoxon signed rank test (p = 0.10) and Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA (p = 0.46) indicated that although a clinical difference in volume assessment was seen between as-acquired and oriented observations (inter-observer and intra-observer), it was statistically insignificant.
