If this was the case we expect incorrect selections to be easily rectified through feedback. Previous work suggested this to be the case in toddlers at typical likelihood (TL) but not in those at elevated likelihood (EL) for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (Bedford et al., 2013). Yet group differences in lexical knowledge may have confounded these findings. Here, TL (N = 29) and EL toddlers (N = 75) chose one of two unfamiliar objects as a referent for a new word. Both groups retained the word-referent mapping above chance when their choices were immediately reinforced but were at chance after corrective feedback. The same pattern of results was obtained when children observed another experimenter make the initial referent choice. Thus, children's referent choices lay memory traces that compete with subsequent correction; these strong word-object associations are not a result of children actively choosing potential referents for new words.Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often have smaller vocabularies in infancy compared to typically-developing children. To understand whether their smaller vocabularies stem from problems in learning, our study compared a prospective risk sample of 18 elevated risk and 11 lower risk 24-month-olds on current vocabulary size and word learning ability using a paradigm in which parents teach their child words. Results revealed that both groups learned novel words, even though parents indicated that infants at elevated risk of ASD knew fewer words. This suggests that these early compromised vocabularies cannot be solely linked to difficulties in word formations. Digital storytelling (DST) is a participatory, arts-based methodology that facilitates the creation of short films called digital stories. Both the DST process and resulting digital stories can be used for education, research, advocacy, and therapeutic purposes in public health. DST is widely used in Europe and North America, and becoming increasingly common in Africa. In East Africa, there is currently limited in-country DST facilitation capacity, which restricts the scope of use. Through a Ugandan-Canadian partnership, six Ugandan faculty and staff from Mbarara University of Science and Technology participated in a pilot DST facilitation training workshop to enhance Ugandan DST capacity. This Participatory Action Research (PAR) study assessed the modification of DST methodology, and identified the future potential of DST in Uganda and other East African settings. In the two-week DST Facilitator Training, trainees created their own stories, learned DST technique and theory, facilitated DST with communiiorities through amplifying local voices.This pilot study suggests DST is a promising methodology that can potentially be used for many purposes in an East African setting. In this work, a commercial pectin (PEC1) and one obtained by direct extraction from citrus fibre (PEC2), were hydrolysed and ultrafiltered at different cut-off (100, 50 and 30 kDa) and then tested in broth with four different probiotic strains Lacticaseibacillus paracasei, Limosilactobacillus fermentum, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. paracasei. In addition, the probiotic strains selected for their growth rate with the fractions of the two pectins were tested for tolerance to different pH values and bile salts. This study demonstrated that POS2 (product from the enzymatic hydrolysis by PEC2) showed greater prebiotic activity than POS1 (product from the enzymatic hydrolysis by PEC1). The results confirmed that citrus pectic oligosaccharides could be used as emerging prebiotics with improved properties due to their antimicrobial and modulating-microbiota ability.
