It is derived by the interpolation of monthly climate anomalies from extensive networks of weather station observations. Here we describe the construction of a major new version, CRU TS v4. It is updated to span 1901-2018 by the inclusion of additional station observations, and it will be updated annually. The interpolation process has been changed to use angular-distance weighting (ADW), and the production of secondary variables has been revised to better suit this approach. This implementation of ADW provides improved traceability between each gridded value and the input observations, and allows more informative diagnostics that dataset users can utilise to assess how dataset quality might vary geographically.Amyloid plaques composed of Aβ amyloid peptides and neurofibrillary tangles are a pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease. In situ identification of early-stage amyloid aggregates in Alzheimer's disease is relevant for their importance as potential targets for effective drugs. Synchrotron-based infrared imaging is here used to identify early-stage oligomeric/granular aggregated amyloid species in situ in the brain of APP/PS1 transgenic mice and Octodon degus for the first time. Also, APP/PS1 mice show fibrillary aggregates at 6 and 12 months whereas very little formation of fibrils is found in aged Octodon degus. Finally, significant decreased burden of early-stage aggregates and fibrillary aggregates is obtained following treatment with G4-His-Mal dendrimers (a neurodegenerative protector) in 6-month-old APP/PS1 mice, thus demonstrating putative therapeutic properties of G4-His-Mal dendrimers in AD models. Identification, localization, and characterization using infrared imaging of these non-fibrillary species in the cerebral cortex at early stages of AD progression in transgenic mice point to their relevance as putative pharmacological targets. No less important, early detection of these structures may be useful in the search for markers for non-invasive diagnostic techniques.STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional survey. OBJECTIVES To identify which functional areas are important in recovery and which psychosocial factors influence life quality among persons with spinal cord injuries in Korea and to compare our results with similar studies from other countries. SETTING University-affiliated rehabilitation hospital. METHODS The survey was distributed to people with spinal cord injuries and captured their targeted functional recoveries and psychosocial goals that can affect life quality. The respondents were asked to place these in order of priority. Participants were also asked questions regarding factors they felt were important for restoring function, their expectations for recovery and to evaluate their health status and satisfaction with their quality of life. RESULTS Fifty-five people were tetraplegia and 45 people were paraplegia. The primary functional recovery goals included the recovery of upper extremity functions in tetraplegic persons and restoration of bladder and bowel functions in paraplegic persons. For psychosocial goals, stress management was the most important factor among both tetraplegic and paraplegic people. The two most important factors for restoring function were proper physical therapy and relationship with their clinician. About half of the respondents had no expectation of restoring their functions. CONCLUSIONS Restoring upper extremity function, sexual function, and bladder and bowel function has been a common concern in previous studies. Our result, however, showed sexual function was less important. Coping with stress was important for life quality, another finding that differed from other studies. Thus, there may be cultural and social differences in the priorities of the target functions.The importance of the gut microbiota in human health has led to an increased interest to study probiotic bacteria. Fermented food is a source of already established probiotics, but it also offers an opportunity to discover new taxa. Four strains of Weissella sp. isolated from Indian fermented food have been genome sequenced and classified into the species W. cibaria based on whole-genome phylogeny. The genome of W. cibaria strain 92, known to utilise xylooligosaccharides and produce lactate and acetate, was analysed to identify genes for oligosaccharide utilisation. Clusters including genes involved in transportation, hydrolysis and metabolism of xylooligosaccharides, arabinooligosaccharides and β-glucosides were identified. Growth on arabinobiose and laminaribiose was detected. A 6-phospho-β-glucosidase clustered with a phosphotransferase system was found upregulated during growth on laminaribiose, indicating a mechanism for laminaribiose utilisation. The genome of W. cibaria strain 92 harbours genes for utilising the phosphoketolase pathway for the production of both acetate and lactate from pentose and hexose sugars but lacks two genes necessary for utilising the pentose phosphate pathway. The ability of W. cibaria strain 92 to utilise several types of oligosaccharides derived from dietary fibres, and produce lactate and acetate makes it interesting as a probiotic candidate for further evaluation.Human activities have profoundly altered the global nutrient cycle through Land Use and Cover Changes (LUCCs) since the industrial revolution and especially during the Great Acceleration (1950 CE). Yet, the impact of such activities on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems above their ecological baselines are not well known, especially when considering the response of these systems to the intensity of LUCCs on nutrient cycles. check details Here, we used a multiproxy approach (sedimentological, geochemical and isotopic analyses, historical records, climate data, and satellite images) to evaluate the role that LUCCs have on Nitrogen (N) cycling in a coastal mediterranean watershed system of central Chile over the last two centuries. Despite long-term anthropogenic use (agriculture, cattle grazing) in the Matanzas watershed- lake system, these LUCC appear to have had little impact on nutrient and organic matter transfer since the Spanish Colonial period. In contrast, the largest changes in N dynamics occurred in the mid-1970s, driven by the replacement of native forests and grasslands by government-subsidized tree plantations of introduced Monterey pine (Pinus radiata) and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus).
