Probiotic bacteria reduce the intestinal colonization of pathogens. Yet, their use in preventing fatal infection caused by foodborne Listeria monocytogenes (Lm), is inconsistent. Here, we bioengineered Lactobacillus probiotics (BLP) to express the Listeria adhesion protein (LAP) from a non-pathogenic Listeria (L. innocua) and a pathogenic Listeria (Lm) on the surface of Lactobacillus casei. The BLP strains colonize the intestine, reduce Lm mucosal colonization and systemic dissemination, and protect mice from lethal infection. The BLP competitively excludes Lm by occupying the surface presented LAP receptor, heat shock protein 60 and ameliorates the Lm-induced intestinal barrier dysfunction by blocking the nuclear factor-κB and myosin light chain kinase-mediated redistribution of the major epithelial junctional proteins. Additionally, the BLP increases intestinal immunomodulatory functions by recruiting FOXP3+T cells, CD11c+ dendritic cells and natural killer cells. Engineering a probiotic strain with an adhesion protein from a non-pathogenic bacterium provides a new paradigm to exclude pathogens and amplify their inherent health benefits. The physics of ferroelectric domain walls is explored using the Bayesian inference analysis of atomically resolved STEM data. We demonstrate that domain wall profile shapes are ultimately sensitive to the nature of the order parameter in the material, including the functional form of Ginzburg-Landau-Devonshire expansion, and numerical value of the corresponding parameters. The preexisting materials knowledge naturally folds in the Bayesian framework in the form of prior distributions, with the different order parameters forming competing (or hierarchical) models. Here, we explore the physics of the ferroelectric domain walls in BiFeO3 using this method, and derive the posterior estimates of relevant parameters. More generally, this inference approach both allows learning materials physics from experimental data with associated uncertainty quantification, and establishing guidelines for instrumental development answering questions on what resolution and information limits are necessary for reliable observation of specific physical mechanisms of interest. Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a cause of significant psychosocial stress not only to the individual with SCI but also to their family. This is compounded when an individual with a new SCI has premorbid behavioral and medical conditions. For individuals requiring long term positive pressure ventilation, transition to noninvasive ventilation (NIV) can improve the long term outcome and improve quality of life. This case report describes a teenage boy with premorbid autism spectrum disorder who incurred an acute SCI and developed chronic respiratory failure. He was admitted to acute inpatient rehabilitation with tracheostomy and ventilator dependence. Using an interdisciplinary team approach with in vivo desensitization behavioral interventions, he was successfully weaned off mechanical ventilation, his tracheostomy tube was removed, and he was transitioned to NIV. This case describes a medically complex adolescent who was successfully transitioned to NIV through behavioral desensitization using a team approach. This is noteworthy given the magnitude of behaviors demonstrated prior to his desensitization protocol. This case demonstrates how serious behavioral barriers to NIV can be overcome using desensitization and strategic behavioral reinforcement techniques. This case describes a medically complex adolescent who was successfully transitioned to NIV through behavioral desensitization using a team approach. The current experiment is a preparatory one for a space experiment planned to be installed in the European Drawer Rack 2 (EDR-2) of the International Space Station (ISS), to investigate drop evaporation in weightlessness. In this work, we concentrate on preliminary experimental results for the evaporation of hydrofluoroether (HFE-7100) sessile drops in a sounding rocket that has been performed in the frame of the MASER-14 Sounding Rocket Campaign, providing the science team with the opportunity to test the module and perform the experiment in microgravity for six consecutive minutes. The focus is on the evaporation rate, experimentally observed thermo-capillary instabilities, and the de-pinning process. The experimental results provide evidence for the relationship between thermo-capillary instabilities and the measured critical height of the sessile drop interface. There is also evidence of the effects of microgravity and Earth conditions on the sessile drop evaporation rate, and the shape of the sessile drop interface and its influence on the de-pinning process.Cisplatin (CP) is an effective chemotherapeutic agent widely used in the treatment of various solid tumours. However, CP nephrotoxicity is an important limitation for CP use; currently, there is no method to ameliorate cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury (AKI). Recently, we identified a specific role of proline-serine-threonine phosphatase-interacting protein 2 (PSTPIP2) in cisplatin-induced AKI. PSTPIP2 was reported to play an important role in a variety of diseases. However, the functions of PSTPIP2 in experimental models of cisplatin-induced AKI have not been extensively studied. The present study demonstrated that cisplatin downregulated the expression of PSTPIP2 in the kidney tissue. Administration of AAV-PSTPIP2 or epithelial cell-specific overexpression of PSTPIP2 reduced cisplatin-induced kidney dysfunction and inhibited apoptosis of renal tubular epithelial cells. Small interfering RNA-based knockdown of PSTPIP2 expression abolished PSTPIP2 regulation of epithelial cell apoptosis in vitro. Selleck LOXO-292 Histone acetylation may impact gene expression at the epigenetic level, and histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors were reported to prevent cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity.
