Both ion fluxes and changes of cytosolic pH take an active part in the signal transduction of different environmental stimuli. Here we studied the anoxia-induced alteration of cytosolic K+ concentration, [K+]cyt, and cytosolic pH, pHcyt, in rice and wheat, plants with different tolerances to hypoxia. The [K+]cyt and pHcyt were measured by fluorescence microscopy in single leaf mesophyll protoplasts loaded with the fluorescent potassium-binding dye PBFI-AM and the pH-sensitive probe BCECF-AM, respectively. Anoxic treatment caused an efflux of K+ from protoplasts of both plants after a lag-period of 300-450 s. The [K+]cyt decrease was blocked by tetraethylammonium (1 mM, 30 min pre-treatment) suggesting the involvement of plasma membrane voltage-gated K+ channels. The protoplasts of rice (a hypoxia-tolerant plant) reacted upon anoxia with a higher amplitude of the [K+]cyt drop. There was a simultaneous anoxia-dependent cytosolic acidification of protoplasts of both plants. The decrease of pHcyt was slower in wheat (a hypoxia-sensitive plant) while in rice protoplasts it was rapid and partially reversible. Ion fluxes between the roots of intact seedlings and nutrient solutions were monitored by ion-selective electrodes and revealed significant anoxia-induced acidification and potassium leakage that were inhibited by tetraethylammonium. The K+ efflux from rice was more distinct and reversible upon reoxygenation when compared with wheat seedlings.Portland cement concrete is fragile in tension and it has numerous negative impacts on the environment. To deal with these issues, both fiber reinforcement and recycled materials can be utilized to manufacture sustainable and ductile concrete. In this study, the synergistic effects of high-performance mineral admixture silica fume and glass fiber reinforcement were investigated on the hardened properties of RC. For this purpose, two concrete mix families, namely, NC and RC were prepared. To understand the benefits of synergistic utilization of glass fiber and silica fume, in both NC and RC, 0.5% glass fiber was incorporated with three different levels of silica fume. i.e., 0%, 5%, and 10%. Both strength and permeability-related durability properties were investigated. Results revealed that combined incorporation of 0.5% fiber and 10% silica fume can help in the production of RC having better mechanical and durability performance compared to reference "NC". Simultaneous incorporation of silica fume and glass fiber produces a combined effect greater than their individual effects on both mechanical and permeability properties of concrete. Silica fume plays a very dominant and positive role in the development of CS, WA, and CIPR of RC, whereas glass fiber plays a vital role in upgrading STS and FS of RC and whereas, with the addition of 0.5% glass fiber, RC can yield 8-9 times higher flexural toughness than that of the plain NC.Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been extensively investigated in interdisciplinary research (such as catalysis, energy, environment, health, etc.) owing to its attractive physico-chemical properties, abundant nature, chemical/environmental stability, low-cost manufacturing, low toxicity, etc. Over time, TiO2-incorporated building/construction materials have been utilized for mitigating potential problems related to the environment and human health issues. However, there are challenges with regards to photocatalytic efficiency improvements, lab to industrial scaling up, and commercial product production. Several innovative approaches/strategies have been evolved towards TiO2 modification with the focus of improving its photocatalytic efficiency. Taking these aspects into consideration, research has focused on the utilization of many of these advanced TiO2 materials towards the development of construction materials such as concrete, mortar, pavements, paints, etc. This topical review focuses explicitly on capturing and highlighting research advancements in the last five years (mainly) (2014-2019) on the utilization of various modified TiO2 materials for the development of practical photocatalytic building materials (PBM). We briefly summarize the prospective applications of TiO2-based building materials (cement, mortar, concretes, paints, coating, etc.) with relevance to the removal of outdoor/indoor NOx and volatile organic compounds, self-cleaning of the surfaces, etc. As a concluding remark, we outline the challenges and make recommendations for the future outlook of further investigations and developments in this prosperous area.Health promoters have been unable to reach and engage people on social media (SM) to the extent that food industry brands and lifestyle personalities have. The objective of this study was to identify the SM post strategies associated with higher engagement in nutrition and food-related posts using a retrospective content analysis. The six most engaging posts from both Facebook and Instagram's 10 most successful nutrition and food-related accounts were analysed across four fields. Subjective and objective post strategies were coded on 736 posts, and associations with engagement were explored using the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO). Lifestyle personalities recorded the highest absolute engagement, while health promoters recorded the highest engagement relative to follower count. Strategies associated with higher Facebook engagement included using hashtags and prompting engagement through announcements, while on Instagram, higher engagement was associated with higher caption counts, providing health information links, prompting engagement through strategies that require an action, and using humorous strategies. Strategies associated with lower Instagram engagement included reposted content, general encouragement to eat strategies, encouragement to exercise strategies, not inducing any emotion/hedonic sensations, and providing a negative tone. Health promoters should adapt SM posts to the different SM platforms and utilise strategies associated with higher engagement to engage with their audience on SM.The development of hybrid multimodal imaging synthons (MIS), carrying in addition to a chelator for radiometal labeling also a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent cyanine dye was the aim of this work. The MIS should be introducible into biomolecules of choice via an efficient and chemoselective click chemistry reaction. After chemical optimization, a successful synthetic strategy towards such hybrid MIS was developed, based on solid phase-based synthesis techniques and applying different near-infrared fluorescent cyanine dyes. The developed hybrid agents were shown to be easily introducible into a model homobivalent peptidic gastrin-releasing peptide receptor- (GRPR)-specific carrier without forming any side products and the MIS as well as their bioconjugates were radiolabeled with the positron-emitter 68Ga3+. read more The hybrid multimodal agents were characterized with regard to their log D s, GRPR target affinities and photophysical characteristics. It could be shown that the properties of the bioconjugates were not per se affected by the introduction of the MIS but that the cyanine dye used and specifically the number of comprised negative charges per dye molecule can have a considerable influence on target receptor binding.
