Background Little is known about the effect of a minimum number of slides required in generating image datasets used to build generalizable machine-learning (ML) models. In addition, the assumption within deep learning is that the increased number of training images will always enhance accuracy and that the initial validation accuracy of the models correlates well with their generalizability. In this pilot study, we have been able to test the above assumptions to gain a better understanding of such platforms, especially when data resources are limited. Methods Using 10 colon histology slides (5 carcinoma and 5 benign), we were able to acquire 1000 partially overlapping images (Dataset A) that were then trained and tested on three convolutional neural networks (CNNs), ResNet50, AlexNet, and SqueezeNet, to build a large number of unique models for a simple task of classifying colon histopathology into benign and malignant. Different quantities of images (10-1000) from Dataset A were used to construct >200 uniqugnificant numbers of cases may not always be needed for generalization, especially for simple tasks. Different CNNs reach peak accuracy with different training set sizes. Further studies are required to evaluate the above findings in more complex ML models prior to using such ancillary tools in clinical settings. Methods A total of 62 articles in the English language with 330 parachute mitral valve patients were retrieved from the PubMed, HighWire Press, and Cochrane Library databases using specific MeSH terms and keywords between January 2000 and December 2018. In these articles, morphology of parachute mitral valve and surgical treatment options were investigated. Results A non-syndromic parachute mitral valve was present in 287 patients (87.0%) and a syndromic parachute mitral valve was present in 43 patients (13.0%). A higher number of patients with a non-syndromic parachute mitral valve presented with congestive heart failure compared to syndromic ones. The patients with a non-syndromic parachute mitral valve often had mitral regurgitation, while syndromic parachute mitral valve patients often had mitral stenosis. Conclusion Parachute mitral valves are usually not an isolated lesion and are often characterized by a constellation of pathological changes of the mitral valve leaflets, annulus, commissures, subvalvular apparatus, and supravalvular mitral ring. Therefore, the majority of the patients need one or more surgical operations. The incidence of adverse events such as reintervention, postoperative complete heart block, and mortality is high in these patients. It has a poor prognosis and mainly classified as cystic (type 1), mixed type (type 2), and solid (type 3). Herein, we present two cases of pleuropulmonary blastoma type 3 presenting with pneumothorax, a rare clinical presentation of pleuropulmonary blastoma, which was successfully treated with surgery. The presence of a thrombus in the left atrial appendage is an exclusion criterion in many studies using transcatheter aortic valve replacement. An 86-year-old male patient was admitted with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis secondary to degeneration of a 22-mm bioprosthetic valve implanted 14 years ago. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed a thrombus in the left atrial appendage and it was confirmed by contrast-enhanced computed tomography. The balloon-expandable valve was successfully implanted into the degenerated aortic bioprosthesis. In conclusion, we aimed to show that valve-in-valve transcatheter aortic valve replacement can be performed in a patient with thrombus in the left atrial appendage. A 34-year-old male patient was admitted to our clinic with progressive ulcerative lesion at the wound site after endovenous laser ablation and varicose vein surgery. selleck inhibitor Although parenteral antibiotherapy was initiated with the diagnosis of wound infection, rapid progression was observed in the lesion. Skin biopsy was performed, and the patient was started on empirical prednisolone treatment with the diagnosis of pyoderma gangrenosum. Complete healing was achieved in the lesion. In conclusion, pyoderma gangrenosum should be considered in the differential diagnosis of postoperative delayed wound healing. A nine-month-old male infant with the diagnosis of congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries was admitted to our clinic with a history of pulmonary artery banding to train the left ventricle three months ago. On admission, he presented with bronchopneumonia, cyanosis, dyspnea, and severe biventricular heart failure associated with significant valvular regurgitation. An urgent double switch operation was performed with atrial and arterial switch procedures. Eight days of mechanical circulatory support was deemed mandatory following surgery. The patient is still under follow-up uneventfully three years after the operation. Methods Between January 2012 and January 2014, 12 newly diagnosed patients with a lung adenocarcinoma, 12 patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma, and eight healthy individuals as the control group were included. After treatment of the fresh samples of lung adenocarcinoma stored at -80°C for ribonucleic acid isolation, and paraffin-embedded tissues of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma were deparaffinized, complementary deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis and expression of 84 genes associated with deoxyribonucleic acid repair were analyzed via real-time polymerase chain reaction assay. According to the expression of tumor cells, expression of each fold change was calculated. Results The BRCA1, BRCA2, CDK7, MLH3, MSH4, NEIL3, SMUG1, UNG, XRCC2, and XRCC4 genes showed more than five-fold higher expression in the patients with lung adenocarcinomas, compared to the control group.
