Salinity is one of the biggest challenges that need to be faced in crop production. Citrus is highly sensitive to salt stress and obtaining rootstocks with improved resistance to salinity is key for the citrus growing industry. In this study, five mutants of Citrus macrophylla rootstock, obtained through gamma radiation and in vitro pre-selected for their resistance to salinity, were irrigated with a solution containing 100 mM of NaCl. After 8 weeks of exposure, the mutants were evaluated for their performance (growth, visual leaf damage) and chlorophyll, proline, starch, soluble sugars and ion contents to determine their degree of resistance to this salinity level. In the saline conditions assayed, all the mutants showed better performance and less leaf damage than Citrus macrophylla. Our data suggest that this improved resistance to salinity was based on their capacity to accumulate less Na (MM4B and MMN1) or Cl- (MM1A, MM4A and MM3B). Besides having the lowest Cl- content, the mutants MM1A, MM4A and MM3B, had the highest NO3- concentrations in salinity. Furthermore, mutants did not show chlorophyll degradation and showed less leaf damage and acceptable plant growth. Other parameters including proline and soluble sugars, did not prove decisive in the salinity resistance of these genotypes. The microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT) gene is considered a strong genetic risk factor for Parkinson's disease (PD) in Caucasians. MAPT is located within an inversion region of high linkage disequilibrium designated as H1 and H2 haplotype, and contains eight other genes which have been implicated in neurodegeneration. The aim of the current study was to identify common coding variants in strong linkage disequilibrium (LD) within the associated loci on chr17q21 harboring MAPT. Sanger sequencing of coding exons in 90 Caucasian late-onset PD (LOPD) patients was performed. Specific gene sequencing for LRRC37A, LRRC37A2, ARL17A and ARL17B was not possible given the high homology, presence of pseudogenes and copy number variants that are in the region, and therefore four genes (NSF, KANSL1, SPPL2C, and CRHR1) were included in the analysis. Coding variants from these four genes that did not perfectly tag (r =1) the MAPT H1/H2 haplotype were genotyped in an independent replication series of Caucasian PD cases (N=851) and controls (N=730). In the 90 LOPD cases we identified 30 coding variants. Eleven non-synonymous variants tagged the MAPT H1/H2 haplotype, including two SPPL2C variants (rs12185233 and rs12373123) that had high pathogenic combined annotation dependent depletion (CADD) scores of >20. In the replication series, the non-synonymous KANSL1 rs17585974 variant was in very strong LD with MAPT H1/H2 and had a high CADD score of 24.7. Application of these insights into management remains constrained due to lack of evidence from real-world ecosystems that capture the natural spatial and temporal gradients at which biodiversity and environmental conditions operate. In this study we measured macrofauna community traits, ecosystem processes and abiotic properties at 9 locations during 4 months, spanning a wide gradient in sedimentary habitats and salinity in the Scheldt estuary, and quantified the (a)biotic contribution to sediment community oxygen consumption, as a measure of ecosystem function. We found that functional attributes of the macrofauna community and its effect on bio-irrigation can predict ecosystem function, but especially during the colder period of the year. This result highlights that generalizations about BDEF relationships, and biodiversity loss on ecosystem functions, are limited whenever this temporal component is not acknowledged.Dynamical models are useful tools to generate sets of varied morphological signals by synthesizing human electrocardiograms (ECGs). These signals are used for testing and improving algorithms of ECG delineation, patient monitoring and heart disease detection. This work presents a procedure based on the ECGSYN model to synthesize ECG morphological changes induced by a percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) procedure in the right coronary artery. We provide a set of parameters to be used in ECGSYN and generate heartbeats with altered ST-T complexes. These characteristic model parameters were obtained through a non-linear fitting algorithm applied to every available heartbeat. To extend these parameters, normal distributions were generated with their means and standard deviations obtained from the STAFF III database. The synthesis procedure shows an average correlation and positive predictive value of 92.2% and 88.2%, respectively. We examined differences in experienced weight discrimination, weight bias, and internalized weight bias in two studies the first comprising gay (n = 351), bisexual (n = 357), and heterosexual (n = 408) men, and the second comprising gay (n = 614) and bisexual (n = 123) men. In Study 1, bisexual men reported experiencing more weight discrimination than gay (r = .07) and heterosexual (r = .08) men. Bisexual (Glass' Δ = 0.41) and gay (Δ = 0.37) men reported greater internalized weight bias than heterosexual men. Heterosexual men reported more weight bias than gay (Cohen's d = 0.35) and bisexual (d = 0.46) men. In Study 2, gay men reported more internalized weight bias than bisexual men (d = 0.26). Sexual orientation did not moderate the relationships of weight stigma with either body dissatisfaction or psychological quality of life. Among gay and bisexual men, experiencing weight discrimination predicted diminished psychological quality of life through internalized weight bias and body dissatisfaction.
