Neurosarcoidosis (NS) is a mimicker of many infectious, neoplastic, and inflammatory diseases. It most commonly involves the cranial nerves followed by meninges, ventricles, hypothalamic-pituitary axis, spinal cord, and brainstem/cerebellum. While NS myelopathy has been increasingly recognized, pathophysiological/prognostic and management principles in NS-mediated cauda equina (CE) and conus medullaris (CM) syndromes, which constitute a small and rare minority of this subset, remain elusive. We present the case of a 49 -year-old Hispanic man who developed a peripheral facial palsy and primary hypogonadism within a span of 12 months and eventually got diagnosed with NS after he presented with CE syndrome. We also performed an extensive literature review, with a discussion on the underlying pathophysiology and current management recommendations for NS-mediated CE/CM syndrome. CE/CM syndromes in a middle-aged man should prompt the consideration of NS as a possible differential diagnosis. Previous approaches to assess agreement grouped the gestures into equivalence classes and ignored the integral properties that are shared between them. In this work, we propose a generalized framework that inherently incorporates the gesture descriptors into the agreement analysis (GDA). In contrast to previous approaches, we represent gestures using binary description vectors and allow them to be partially similar. In this context, we introduce a new metric referred to as Soft Agreement Rate ( S A R ) to measure the level of agreement and provide a mathematical justification for this metric. Further, we performed computational experiments to study the behavior of S A R and demonstrate that existing agreement metrics are a special case of our approach. Our method was evaluated and tested through a guessability study conducted with a group of neurosurgeons. Nevertheless, our formulation can be applied to any other user-elicitation study. Results show that the level of agreement obtained by S A R is 2.64 times higher than the previous metrics. Finally, we show that our approach complements the existing agreement techniques by generating an artificial lexicon based on the most agreed properties.The benthic environments of coral reefs are heavily shaped by physiochemical factors, but also the ecological interactions of the animals and plants in the reef ecosystem. Microbial populations may be shared within the ecosystem of sediments, seagrasses and reef fish. In this study, we hypothesize that coral reef and seagrass environments share members of the microbial community that are rare in some habitats and enriched in others, and that animals may integrate this connectivity. We investigated the potential connectivity between the microbiomes of sediments, seagrass blades and roots (Syringodium isoetifolium), and a seagrass-specialist parrotfish (C. spinidens) guts in reef areas of Fiji. We contrasted these with sediment samples from the Florida Keys, gut samples from surgeonfish (A. nigricauda, Acanthurinae sp. unknown, C. striatus), and ocean water microbiomes from the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans to test the robustness of our characterizations of microbiome environments. In general, water, sediment and fish gut samples were all distinct microbiomes.
